About Birmingham

Birmingham is known as ‘England’s Second City’ and, after London, is the UK’s most populated city. While the city has 1.1 million people, it rises to 3.7 million if you include the wider Birmingham Metropolitan area. Located in the heart of the West Midlands, it has excellent transport communications with the rest of the country. It is the fourth most visited city in the UK by overseas tourists.

In 1791, Birmingham was labelled “the first manufacturing town in the world” and the city played a huge part in the Industrial Revolution in terms of productivity and invention. For many years it was an engineering and car manufacturing centre.

Birmingham’s economy today is dominated by the service sector, accounting for 88% of employment. It is also the largest centre in Britain for employment in public administration, health (University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust) and education. Its metropolitan economy is the second largest in the UK, while its six universities make it the largest centre of higher education outside of London.

Investment in recent years has transformed much of the city centre, with the regeneration of the historic canals and the development of shopping areas such as the Bullring and Mailbox.  Meanwhile, the high number of start-ups and independent businesses means that Birmingham is second only to London when it comes to entrepreneurial spirit.

Birmingham is a big-hitter culturally, too, with international-standard music and theatre venues. It is home to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Birmingham Royal Ballet. Sports clubs include football clubs Birmingham City and Aston Villa (former European Cup winners), and cricket club Warwickshire, whose Edgbaston ground hosts international matches.

Famous associations include chocolate firm Cadbury, while a little-known fact outside of Birmingham is that 40% of jewellery made in the UK is produced by the hundreds of independent jewellers in the city’s Jewellery Quarter.
