About Nottinghamshire

Nottinghamshire is a county in the English East Midlands, where the main area of population and commerce is the county town of Nottingham. Mansfield is the second biggest settlement. The county takes in the Roman Fosse Way and has the River Trent running though it. It is famous for the ancient woodland of Sherwood Forest and the legend of Robin Hood.

Historically, Nottinghamshire was important for coal mining, iron ore and textiles. Today, its economy is based on commerce, finance, digital media, retail and the wider service sector. Manufacturing also retains a presence.

Nottinghamshire has several market towns, which grew up around agriculture and fruit growing – Newark, Mansfield, Southwell, Retford, Beeston and Worksop. The county’s green spaces, historic houses and monuments, and its growing food and drink reputation, have increased the importance of the tourism industry. Southwell Minster is among the most stunning cathedrals in the country.

There are several NHS hospitals, while in education, the biggest universities are in Nottingham. County Hall, the HQ for Nottinghamshire County Council, is also in Nottingham. Famous cultural associations include the novelist DH Lawrence and the poet, Lord Byron. In sport, the county has Southwell Racecourse, Trent Bridge cricket ground, and a number of football clubs, the most successful being Nottingham Forest.
