Oxford is known as ‘the city of dreaming spires’, most famous for The University of Oxford – said to be the oldest university in the English-speaking world. The university, which often tops the world ratings, was first mentioned in 12th century records. The grand university buildings dominate the city centre.
Economically, the University of Oxford is estimated to contribute almost £6 billion to the UK economy and support 50,000 full-time jobs. It currently has 24,000 students.
But Oxford, which has around 160,000 residents, is much more than a university city. As well as education and research, it has a mixed economy that incudes manufacturing, publishing, science-based industries and tourism. Located between London and Birmingham, it grew as a major area for car manufacture – Morris Motors Ltd was established in the city in the 1920s and British Leyland had a base in Oxford. BMW now produces the Mini here.
Oxford is a major tourist destination, attracting around 7 million visitors from the UK and abroad every year to see the beautiful buildings and visit the world class centres of culture, including the city’s museums, galleries and theatres. The Sheldonian Theatre was built by Sir Christopher Wren.
Another attraction is the River Thames which flows through Oxford and is well-known for punting. The Oxford Association of Hotels & Guest Houses lists the city’s accommodation. The lively city centre has a diverse range of cafés, restaurants, bistros and bars, and has excellent retail outlets – the main shopping mall is Westgate.
Public services in the city are provided by Oxford City Council, and the local health service by Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – the main A&E site is the John Radcliffe Hospital.
